Driving is the best way to get about the Italian countryside. With good, well-signposted roads, all regions of Italy are easily accessible. However, long journeys can be expensive because of the relatively high price of petrol and motorway tolls.
Road rules
Vehicles drive on the right hand side in Italy and drivers must be at least 18 and carry a full valid driving licence or international driving permit, and national identity card or passport with them at all times.
Seatbelts must be fastened while driving, including the rear seats if they are fitted with belts. Children under 12 can only travel in the front if a child-restraint system is fitted.
Make sure you have a red warning triangle in the car, as its use is obligatory in the event of a breakdown.
Mobile phones can only be operated with a hands-free set and on-the-spot fines enforce this. The maximum blood/alcohol level permitted is 0.5 mg/ml.
