Modern capital Stockholm carefully guards its rich cultural heritage - medieval houses neighbor here with the up-to-date constructions. Stockholm is not a very big city, all its attractions are located close to each other and can be seen in a short time.
Stockholm is divided into eight districts - Gamla Stan, Ostermalm, Sodermalm, Vasastaden, Djurgarden, Norrmalm and City, Kungsholmen, Skargarden.
Medieval Gamla Stan takes you 750 years back. Old buildings were reconstructed and restored thus creating this special atmosphere. This district is considered to the place where intellectual elite lives. Big square Stortorget in Middle Ages was the centre of the city. It's here where Stockholm stock exchange building rises. Two pedestrian streets - Vasterlanggatan and Osterlanggaten are famous for its cafes, bars and antique shops. One of Stockholm must-sees, the great monument of the past and present - Royal Palace is located in this very district. The change of guard is beautiful ceremony everybody coming to Stockholm should see. Nowadays this palace is only a working place of the king. Royal family lives in other palace - Drotningholm, to northwest of the centre.
Norrmalm adjoins Gamla Stan and altogether they form the centre of the city. It's a great shopping place. There are the most and the best cinemas are concentrated. All the streets are pedestrian and a lot of them are paved, so forget you heels if you really want to enjoy your walking trip!
Green Djurgarden has once been a royal hunting reserve. Now it's often called "Museum Island". The main Stockholm museums - Skansen, ship museum Vasa and others are situated there. It's the favorite place for rest among Stockholm citizens.
Kungsholmen also called "Royal Island" is known for one of the most original buildings - town council (also known as Tre Kronor"). This red brick structure was established in 1911-1923 in modern style. In its Golden Room the banquets after the Nobel Awards take place.
Ostermalm is the most chic and prestigious district of Stockholm and it occupies the Eastern part of the city. Karlaplan square is the heart of the district. In this district lived the famous Swedish film director - Ingmar Bergman. It's the district of television, radio and theatre. Here the best schools are located.
Sodermalm is an island not far from the city centre. It was a working class district since XV century and now it has the highest density of population in the whole Sweden.
Vasastaden - big district to the north from the centre of the Swedish capital. Norra Bantorget square marks the border between Vasastaden and centre. It was a suburb of Stockholm, but after intense building up in 1880-1930 it became a part of the city.
The so-called Skargarden represents a row of islands. Stockholm archipelago consists of 24 000 islands different in size and surface. Boat trip between these natural masterpieces can become an unforgettable experience.
